Dick Morse continued:
Dick, fortunately, has been nearly injury free most of his adult life. He played basketball and football earlier on, and that gave him the discipline to stay in shape. Just to be safe, he takes routine precautions to prevent injuries, and as a result, he stays flexible, healthy, and ready to play.
As good as he is, Dick is very respectful of some of his more accomplished peers. Yes, it seems there are always better players out there, although in his case they are few in number. One of the few in that small and select group of players is King van Nostrand, who I had the privilege of seeing play in an exhibition some time ago. Of their two meetings on the court, van Nostrand, won convincingly. Just so you know, he is a former national and world champion.
Q: How did you come to take up tennis?
A: Dick relates the story of one day being frustrated with the wait you sometimes encounter on the links:
"I was playing golf one day at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham, Ma. After we (his group) finished nine holes, I turned to go to the 10th. When we made it over, there were four waiting ahead of us. I turned to the group and told them that I was going to go down to the tennis courts and start playing tennis."
Well, he was 36 then, and he went on to make New England (and Florida) tennis history.
Q: How do you bounce back in a match when you're behind?
A: "Just keep plugging away... knowing your abilities is important... Don't try any foolish shots... Keep the ball flowing back and keep it deep".
Q: What is your secret to success?
